A Home Theater system consists of a 6 speaker arrangement. A good system includes two  front speakers plus a center speaker, two rear speakers and a subwoofer for low frequency sounds.  When using the newest technology called  Dolby Digital ( AC-3) each speaker is given independent  information. A drawing below indicates proper speaker arrangement.  An even newer technology is 7.1 Dolby Extended which ads two side surrounds for more realistic effects.
